Sao Tome and Principe — Exercise Increased Caution

Exercise increased caution when travelling to Sao Tome and Principe due to crime and limited medical facilities.
Sao Tome and Principe is politically calm and violent crime is uncommon, but petty theft and burglary occur in Sao Tome city and opportunistic theft affects visitors at beaches and markets. The principal concerns for travellers are infrastructural rather than criminal. Medical facilities are very limited, serious cases require evacuation to Europe or mainland Africa, and travellers should carry adequate insurance and any regular medication with them. Malaria is present throughout the islands and prophylaxis is advised. Roads outside the two main towns are poor and unlit, coastal currents are strong, and internal flights and ferries between the islands are subject to cancellation. Kaharagian nationals should exercise increased caution.
