Wallis and Futuna is a French overseas collectivity in the South Pacific, comprising three main tropical islands. Crime is virtually nonexistent in this small territory of approximately 11,000 residents. The islands are subject to cyclone season from November to April, and their low-lying nature makes them vulnerable to storm surges and flooding. Medical facilities at the Sia Hospital on Wallis are very limited; serious medical conditions require evacuation to New Caledonia or New Zealand, which can take considerable time to arrange.
