Puerto Rico — Exercise Increased Caution

Puerto Rico is a vibrant U.S. territory, but travellers should exercise increased caution due to elevated crime levels in certain areas.
Puerto Rico is an unincorporated U.S. territory in the Caribbean with a rich cultural heritage and well-developed tourism infrastructure. While tourist areas are generally well-patrolled, the territory experiences elevated rates of violent crime, including carjackings and armed robbery, particularly in certain neighbourhoods of San Juan and other urban areas; travellers should avoid isolated areas after dark. Puerto Rico lies in the Atlantic hurricane belt, and the season from June to November can bring severe storms, as demonstrated by the devastating Hurricane María in 2017. Medical facilities in San Juan are of a good standard, with several hospitals providing comprehensive care; facilities may be more limited in rural areas. Travellers should remain aware of their surroundings, avoid displaying expensive items, and use registered taxis or ride-sharing services.
