New Caledonia — Exercise Increased Caution

New Caledonia has experienced significant civil unrest related to political tensions over independence and electoral reform. Travellers should exercise increased caution.
New Caledonia is a French special collectivity in the South Pacific. In 2024, serious unrest erupted over proposed electoral reforms perceived as diluting the indigenous Kanak vote, resulting in multiple fatalities, widespread destruction, and a state of emergency. While conditions have stabilised, underlying political tensions remain, and further protests or unrest cannot be ruled out. Medical facilities at the Médipôle Koutio hospital in Nouméa provide good care, but services on the outer islands are limited. Travellers should avoid demonstrations, monitor local media, maintain flexible travel plans, and follow the instructions of local authorities at all times.
