Falkland Islands — Exercise Increased Caution

The Falkland Islands are remote and sparsely populated. Travellers should exercise increased caution due to extreme remoteness and the ongoing sovereignty dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina.
The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, approximately 480 kilometres east of Patagonia. The ongoing sovereignty dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina means travellers should be aware of potential diplomatic sensitivities, particularly when transiting through Argentina. The islands' extreme remoteness presents logistical challenges; medical facilities at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Stanley are limited, and emergency evacuation can be difficult and time-consuming due to weather and distance. The terrain includes unexploded ordnance from the 1982 conflict in some areas, which are clearly marked and must be avoided. Harsh weather conditions, including strong winds and rapidly changing conditions, require appropriate preparation and clothing.
