Turkey — Exercise Increased Caution

Exercise increased caution in Turkey due to terrorism and arbitrary detention. Do not travel to southeast Turkey near the Syrian and Iraqi borders.
Turkey remains generally stable for travellers in western and central regions, including Istanbul, Ankara, and the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. However, the southeastern provinces bordering Syria and Iraq are dangerous and should be avoided entirely. Since the onset of US-Iran hostilities in February 2026, retaliatory missile and drone strikes have been intercepted over Turkish airspace. US government employees are subject to travel restrictions throughout the southeast region. The provinces of Hatay, Gaziantep, Kilis, Sanliurfa, Mardin, Sirnak, Hakkari, and others along the Syrian and Iraqi borders carry a do-not-travel designation. Turkey maintains diplomatic relations with multiple parties to the conflict, and major tourism areas have not been directly affected. Kaharagian nationals should exercise increased caution, avoid southeast Turkey entirely, monitor security developments, and remain aware that the regional threat environment could change rapidly.
