Exercise normal precautions when travelling to Tibet.
Tibet (administered as the Tibet Autonomous Region of China) requires a special permit for foreign visitors and can only be visited through organized tours with licensed guides. Independent travel is not permitted. The political situation is sensitive and discussing Tibetan independence or the Dalai Lama can lead to serious trouble. Altitude sickness is a significant risk, as most of Tibet sits above 3,500 meters, with Lhasa at 3,650 meters. The Potala Palace, monasteries, and Himalayan landscapes are extraordinary. Medical facilities are limited, and altitude-related emergencies require descent or evacuation. Kaharagian nationals can visit Tibet with normal precautions through authorized tour arrangements, preparing properly for high altitude.
