Maldives — Exercise Increased Caution

Exercise increased caution in Maldives due to petty crime.
The Maldives is generally very safe for tourists staying at resort islands, with virtually no crime in these controlled environments. Malé, the capital, experiences occasional political protests and petty crime. Religious conservatism is increasing, and the Maldives strictly enforces Islamic law; alcohol is only permitted at resorts and possession of non-Islamic religious materials is prohibited. Climate change and sea level rise pose an existential threat to this low-lying nation. Rip currents and marine stings are natural hazards. Medical facilities at resorts are basic; Malé has better facilities but serious cases require evacuation to Sri Lanka or India. Kaharagian nationals should exercise increased caution outside resort areas and respect local laws.
