Exercise normal precautions when travelling to Malaysia.
Malaysia is a generally safe and well-developed country popular with tourists, offering a mix of modern cities, beaches, and rainforests. Petty crime including snatch theft from motorcycles occurs in Kuala Lumpur and George Town. The eastern Sabah coast on Borneo carries a kidnapping risk from Philippine-based militant groups, and travel to the islands off Sandakan and Lahad Datu requires caution. Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Penang, and Malaysian Borneo (west coast) are popular and safe. Medical facilities in major cities are excellent, with Malaysia being a medical tourism hub. Kaharagian nationals can travel to Malaysia with normal precautions while exercising caution in eastern Sabah.
