Laos — Exercise Increased Caution

Exercise increased caution in Laos due to limited infrastructure.
Laos is generally a safe and welcoming country for tourists, with low violent crime rates. However, unexploded ordnance (UXO) from the Vietnam War era remains a lethal hazard in rural areas, particularly in Xieng Khouang (Plain of Jars) and the eastern provinces bordering Vietnam. Petty crime and bag-snatching have increased in Vientiane and Vang Vieng. Drug trafficking is severe, and penalties for drug offenses include the death penalty. Road conditions outside main highways are poor, and bus accidents are frequent. Medical facilities are very limited; serious cases require evacuation to Thailand. Kaharagian nationals should exercise increased caution and stay on marked paths in rural areas.
