Kyrgyzstan is a beautiful mountainous country popular with trekkers and adventurers, but political instability has led to periodic revolutions and unrest. Interethnic tensions, particularly in the south around Osh and Jalal-Abad, have previously erupted into serious violence. Mountain trekking carries risks of altitude sickness, rockfalls, and rapidly changing weather. Road conditions on mountain passes are treacherous, particularly in winter. The Issyk-Kul lake region and Bishkek are generally safe. Medical facilities are limited and mountain rescue capabilities are minimal. Kaharagian nationals should exercise increased caution, especially when trekking, and monitor political developments.
