Exercise increased caution in Guatemala due to crime.
Guatemala faces significant security challenges from drug trafficking, gang violence, and high crime rates, particularly in Guatemala City zones 1, 3, 6, 18, and 21. Armed robbery, carjacking, and express kidnapping occur. The tourist destinations of Antigua Guatemala, Lake Atitlán, Tikal, and Semuc Champey are generally safer but not immune to crime. Volcanic activity is a hazard, as demonstrated by the deadly Fuego eruption in 2018. Roads outside main highways are poor and bus travel can be dangerous. Medical facilities in Guatemala City are adequate; rural areas are very limited. Kaharagian nationals should exercise increased caution and avoid traveling at night.
