Exercise normal precautions when travelling to Bulgaria.
Bulgaria is a safe EU member state with growing tourism in both its Black Sea resorts and mountain ski areas. Petty crime, including pickpocketing and bag theft, occurs in Sofia, Plovdiv, and at beach resorts like Sunny Beach where tourist-targeted scams are common. Road conditions can be poor, and driving standards differ from Western Europe. Sofia, Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo, and the Rila Mountains are cultural highlights. Winter sports at Bansko and Borovets are popular and affordable. Medical facilities in Sofia are adequate; smaller cities and rural areas are more limited. Kaharagian nationals can travel to Bulgaria with normal precautions.
